Road Safety

Why is Road Safety Important?

How much importance do you give to road safety? A considerable number of lives will be saved if you and I can take road safety more seriously. According to Premium Times, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recorded 3,947 road crashes and 1,758 deaths in the first quarter of 2020. Often, these accidents occur due to negligence that can be avoided if proper road safety is put in place.

Fifth United Nations Global Road Safety Week – Nigerian

  •    Road traffic injuries are now the leading killer of children and young people aged 05-29 years.
  • Globally, of all road traffic deaths, pedestrians and cyclists account for 26% and motorcycle riders, and passengers account for 28%.
  • The risk of road traffic death remains three times higher in low-income countries than in high-income countries, with rates highest in Africa (26.6 per 100,000 population) and lowest in Europe (9.3 per 100,000 population).
  • Every year, over 39,000 Nigerians die from road crashes.
  •   In the 2018 Global Status Report on Road Safety, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated road traffic fatalities in Nigeria at 39,802, while the estimated rate per 100,000 deaths stood at 21.4.

Road safety measures are put in place to ensure drivers use roads safely with caution. And as a result, keep themselves, pedestrians, passengers, and motorists safe.

Often, as a driver, you tend to feel more comfortable behind the wheel as your experience increases. As a result, you’re of the illusion that you can multitask while driving. However, that is just what it is. An illusion! Because it’s in these moments of multitasking that often lead to fatal crashes. Driving and chatting, chats that you could respond to when you get to your destination.

Distractions that can cause injury and road accidents

road distraction
  • Reading chats/ chatting while driving or walking
  • Turning to talk to kids in the back seat
  • Eating or drinking while driving
  • Picking calls
  •  Multitasking behind the wheel

Are chats really worth a life? You may be an experienced driver; nonetheless, it is essential always to focus when you’re behind the wheel of a car.

Road safety becomes a crucial aspect of our lives if we want to preserve life. It is essential to teach our children as they start their journey as new drivers.

Importance of road safety

We forget the importance of the responsibility of drivers when we get into the routine. And this is what makes accidents a common occurrence on our roads.

1. Risking Lives

When you’re on the road, several lives are at stake, including yours. You may feel that I just need to look at my phone for a couple of seconds. So, it’s no big deal. But that’s all it takes a couple of seconds, and life is lost. Think about it, what if the other driver’s eyes are off the road also for that same amount of time?

You may be an experienced and a safe driver; however, every other driver on the road may not be. It’s important to remember this fact. Look out for drivers that may not be able to decipher road signs as they should. Road safety is a shared responsibility!

2. Repair Costs

car repairs

Have you thought of how many repairs you’ll have to do should an accident occur? You probably think that’s what insurance companies are for, right? But does your insurance company also cover your time and the inconveniences? I don’t think so! Your insurance company will only cover in cash at most.

The time you’ll have to take your car to the mechanic is the time you could be doing something else. Not to mention the stress you’ll go through while your car is under repair. You may have to opt for a rental car if you can afford it. Otherwise, taking and picking the children from school and going to work on time will not be on your table.

You can avoid all of these. All it takes is road safety measures. Be cautious when behind the wheel.

3. Court Proceedings

court proceedings

What happens after a car crash? Do you want to go through all of that? There’s a possibility that court proceedings will come into the picture. And this calls for an accident attorney. Do you want to wind up in court? Even if you are the one suing the other party, going to court can still take a toll on you. Therefore, always be cautious behind the wheel and look out for reckless drivers or riders.

What to Do After a Crash

It’s unfortunate that while you’re vigilant and cautious on the road, others may not be. Thus, even the safest drivers end up in a car crash.

Five things you should do after an accident according to Autocheck:

  1. Keep calm
  2. Call the police
  3. Take pictures of the scene
  4. Make an accurate report
  5. Seek medical advice

Be a safer driver and make a difference. You’d be amazed at the difference one safer driver on the road can make. If we all can put in a little effort, our roads will be safer.
This is by no means saying that accidents won’t happen, because they will. However, if we educate ourselves on the importance of road safety, accidents will lessen. Thus, we’ll save lives.
